Keith Barnett was hired in October 2018 as the Director of the Elmore County Emergency Management Agency. His duties include working closely with elected officials, law enforcement, volunteer fire departments, and other volunteer agencies to plan and prepare for emergencies throughout the county. His office is the liaison for Homeland Security, FEMA, and State EMA for any emergency in Elmore County.
After 20 years of service, Keith retired as a Major from the Montgomery Police Department. He has served on numerous boards of directors for both government and non-profit agencies. He was the 2001 VOCAL Police Officer of the Year for Alabama. From 2007-2011, he served on the FBI's ViCAP Advisory Board, which is an honor extended to only 12 law enforcement officers each year.
Keith currently serves as the 2nd Vice-President of the Alabama Association of Emergency Managers (AAEM) and Legislative Committee Chairman. He also serves on the National Association of Counties (NACo) Justice and Public Safety Steering Committee. He has received both his FEMA Certified Emergency Managers and State of Alabama Certified Local Emergency Managers accreditations.
Keith and his wife Dedra have been happily married for 29 years, and they have one son, Austin who is 25 years old. With deep family ties in Elmore County, he remains committed to keeping the citizens of Elmore County informed and prepared in the event of an emergency.
